I did a little experiment today to see if I could walk to the YMCA, get changed, run on the treadmill for 30 minutes, get changed back into work clothes, and walk back to work during my lunch hour. It was close, with all the snow on the ground making for a challenging walk, I did the whole thing in an hour and 10 minutes.
I’m lucky in that I have a flexible job so taking a few minutes over an hour for lunch is absolutely no big deal at all. I will plan to do this two days a week. So I will do the circuit training class two evenings a week, running at lunch to days a week, and the Y again on Saturdays. And something active on Sundays like ice skating to round out the week. I’ll take one day off a week.
I’m also lucky that I don’t have to get dressed up for work, so I can easily change back into my work clothes after running. I’m not terribly sweaty so I can get away with not showering. However, I think if you keep your situation in mind, you can always figure out a way to get in a half-hour run at some point during the day. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. When the weather gets better and the snow melts, I won’t have to take 10 minutes to walk to the Y, I will just change my clothes in the bathroom at work, and run right out the door. Hopefully by then, I’ll be running longer distances so I will use more of the hour for running.
